Mtech's Mission

    The mission of the Maryland Technology Enterprise Institute (Mtech), a unit of the A. James Clark School of Engineering at the University of Maryland, is to:

    • Educate the next generation of technology entrepreneurs;
    • Create successful technology ventures; and
    • Connect Maryland companies with university resources to help them succeed.

    Mtech has built a comprehensive entrepreneurship and innovation ecosystem at the University of Maryland. Its programs arm top students from around the world with the knowledge of how to successfully launch companies and guide aspiring and existing entrepreneurs through the entire lifecycle of launching and maintaining technology-based ventures.

    Hinman CEOs Program

    Overview

    Living-Learning Entrepreneurship Program

    As the nation’s first living-learning entrepreneurship program, Hinman CEOs is a groundbreaking initiative placing entrepreneurial students from all technical and non-technical academic disciplines in a unique community. Students live together, learn about entrepreneurship, and can launch new ventures. The mission of Hinman CEOs is to foster an entrepreneurial spirit, create a sense of community and cooperation, and develop ethical leaders. All undergraduates from the University of Maryland, College Park are invited to apply for this competitive program. Brian Hinman, University of Maryland A. James Clark School of Engineering alumnus and successful entrepreneur, provided funding to initiate and support the Program.

    Our 12-Month Program

    We create a dynamic environment that is conducive to helping you every day by surrounding you with people who will mentor, inspire, and challenge you to achieve your entrepreneurial goals.

    Spring 2020

    Enroll in ENES140 Discovering New Ventures, or an HEIP equivalent, to complete the prerequisite course.

    Select roommates for the optional residential experience in South Campus Commons Two.

    Fall 2020

    Meet incoming and returning Hinman CEOs at our fall Welcome Event.

    Move-in to the Hinman CEOs residences (for residential members).

    Develop your startup idea and partner with Hinman CEOs students to develop the business model in ENES 460 Fundamentals of Technology Startup Ventures.

    Collaborate with teammates in the Hinman CEOs co-working spaces.

    Access coaching from Hinman CEOs faculty, staff, and alumni.

    Share your innovative business model at our fall Demo Day.

    Spring 2021

    Reconnect with fellow Hinman CEOs at our spring Welcome Event.

    Create your prototype and test market the product in ENES462 Marketing High-Technology Products and Innovations.

    Benefit from Hinman CEOs co-working spaces and coaching from Hinman CEOs faculty, staff, and alumni.

    Compete for exclusive Hinman CEOs seed funding for your startup.

    Demonstrate your prototype at our spring Demo Day.

    Summer 2021

    Launch your product with coaching and funding from the Hinman CEOs Program.

    Beyond Summer 2021

    Enroll in a 3-credit elective to fulfill the 12-credit program requirement. All credits earned for Hinman CEOs are applicable to the 15-credit Minor in Technology Entrepreneurship.

    Explore the next steps for your startup. All Hinman CEOs are highly encouraged to launch a new startup during their time in the program. Alumni may choose to pursue their startup full-time after graduation, or may sell the startup or hire operators thereafter.
